The clinic owner ran a mixed-animal clinic in a rural community, where veterinary care was care was personal and commitment ran deep. For decades, he served the region with quiet dedication, often going above and beyond for clients who had become like family. 

CHALLENGE 

In his mid-60s, considering retirement, he faced a difficult question: who would carry this work forward? 

He didn’t want to sell to a consolidator and watch the clinic lose its soul. But he also couldn’t find a clear path to succession on his own. He wanted to protect what he’d built and pass it on to people who understood the stakes—not just the business, but the bond with the community. Who would carry forward his mission: medical excellence and a strong commitment to rural veterinary care?

TURNING POINT 

The clinic owner partnered with Smartemis early on, becoming the second clinic to place his trust in the network. He saw something in the model—something that honored independence and built for the long haul. He was drawn to the model’s respect for autonomy and long-term thinking. Together, they began mapping out a succession plan that would preserve the clinic’s mission and culture.

TRANSFORMATION 

Over three years, Smartemis helped the clinic owner build a bridge to the future. The Smartemis team recruited 3 new team members, stabilize operations and prepare for a smooth handover. They provided 10 hours of financial guidance, 16 hours of leadership coaching, and led a values-aligned search for two successor veterinarians. They found two highly qualified veterinarians from Romania to take the reins and preserve the clinic’s spirit and legacy. 

LOOKING AHEAD 

The veterinarian and his wife are now thinking to work longer, knowing the clinic will remain in trusted hands. The new leaders are already embedded in the team and aligned with its values. The mission he carried for decades will continue, shaped by new energy but rooted in the same care.
